Crockern Tor is almost in the centre of Dartmoor, a little north of Two
Bridges.
Crockern Tor was the meeting place of the Stannary Parliament, the
congregation of local tin miners which met every once in a while during the
Middle Ages. Devon's tin miners were governed by Stannary Law, not
English Common Law. Stannary Laws were enacted at Parliaments held at
Crockern Tor.
Crockern Tor stands at 1,300ft (396m) and is made up of two rock piles. The
north-eastern rocks form a rock-ridge and the south-western outcrop forms a
large, natural amphitheatre which was known as Parliament Rock. On Crockern
Tor there are what are reputed to be a table and seats hewn out of the rocks
which are supposed to be used by the Stannary Parliaments.
Crockern Tor is the home of the ancient pagan God of Dartmoor "Old Crockern".
